Achilles Slot Review: Discover Gameplay & Special Functions
As one of the Iliad’s most renowned characters, Achilles has captured the minds and hearts of many over the past couple of millennia. So, it’s quite fitting to see Yggdrasil give him his very own video slot with his own name as the title.
The provider’s efforts together with the Jelly studio have created an enjoyable take on the character and his efforts in the Trojan wars. It’s a fitting look for a slot that favours a medium volatility setting and players have loads to look forward to when spinning through Achilles. The slot crams in three bonus features, as well as a myriad of base game features and game modifiers to round off the experience. But is this the grand Greek slot odyssey you’ve been waiting for, or just a cursed voyage that’s best left untouched? Keep reading our full review below to find out.
Achilles Features
Yggdrasil and Jelly studios have packed Achilles with all kinds of exciting features and modifiers. The action kicks off in the base game, where a series of game modifiers can be triggered at random on every spin. Additionally, three separate scatter symbols can activate their respective bonus rounds respectively. There’s loads of fun to be had here, with a wide variety of mechanics that will keep you spinning at Achilles’ reels.
Game Modifiers
These modifiers can occur during both the base game and free spins. They are all triggered at random, offering a variety of mechanics that will help you on your quest across the Aegean.
Named after the ancient Greek king himself, the Agamemnon modifier sees the great commander send forth his legions across the reels. This results in at least one reel being completely converted into Wild symbols.
As part of the Greek war effort, the Skinny Greek Soldier modifier gives us a look at the ground troops’ activities. The soldier fires a catapult over the walls of troy, revealing several mystery symbols on the reels. All mystery symbols reveal the same symbol type, with an associate win multiplier.
One of the titular characters in the Trojan wars, Helen herself offers a modifier onto the reels. Her blessing awards a supersized symbol that can vary in size, either landing as a single 2×2 symbol, two 2×2 symbols or an even bigger 3×3 symbol. These supersized tokens can represent any of the game’s symbols except for scatter symbols.
Achilles himself provides the last of the game modifiers. Whenever triggered, the feature presents players with a set of 6 shields. Players must pick one of the shields for the chance to instantly trigger one of the three bonus features or a 5 of a kind win.
Empire Bonus
A minimum of 3 scatter symbols are required to trigger any of the 3 bonus features in Achilles. The final scatter symbol, landing on reel 5 will determine what bonus type players get to play.
The Empire bonus puts players in the shoes of Agamemnon himself, commanding troops across the Aegean. A map of the Eastern Mediterranean is displayed, and players can pick where to lead the king’s forces. Successful skirmishes award an instant cash prize and players can continue their campaign until their army is defeated, putting an end to the bonus rounds.
Trojan Horse Bonus
With a set of Trojan Horse scatter symbols, players are directed to this iconic bonus feature. The famous trojan horse pops up on the screen, with a handful of Greek soldiers attempting to enter the deceitful structure. Each time a soldier makes it into the horse, players receive an instant cash prize.
Achilles Free Spins
The traditional free spins feature in Achilles is triggered via 3 regular scatter symbols. Starting off with 10 free spins, players will see additional wild symbols landing during these bonus rounds. Any wilds landing on reels 1 to 4 will remain sticky for 3 bonus rounds. Special symbols landing on reel 5 add another free spin to your tally.
Achilles Theme and Symbols
The clean design gives Achilles a lighter touch, one that suits this medium volatility slot. The visuals may not be the most impressive we’ve ever seen in a video slot, but the art direction paired with the game’s animations make it an enjoyable presentation.
Achilles RTP & Volatility
RTP is probably the slot’s Achilles heel, if you’ll pardon the pun. The 94.99% rate is lower than what is expected of similar slots, although it does complement the medium level of volatility in play.
How to Play Achilles
Played on 5 reels and 3 rows, Achilles has 20 paylines to win from. Players can set their preferred bet amount between 0.20 and 80, before hitting the spin button to play.
